About Me

Dr. Robert Barasa Nyakoe stands at the forefront of maternal and fetal medicine, embodying the pinnacle of dedication and expertise in the field of Obstetrics and Gynaecology. With an illustrious career that began after graduating with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) from the University of Nairobi in 1994, Dr. Nyakoe’s commitment to women’s health has only deepened over the years. His educational journey continued with a string of prestigious qualifications, including the Fellowship of the College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (FCOG) from the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA) in 2002, a Master of Medicine (MMed) in Obstetrics and Gynaecology from the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in 2009, an Advanced Health Management Program (AHMP) completed the same year through a collaboration between FDP and Yale, a Certificate in Maternal Fetal Medicine from CMSA in 2020, a Master of Science in Medicine (MSc Med) from Wits in 2021, and a Postgraduate Diploma in Health Sciences Education (PG Dip HSE) from Wits in 2023.

Throughout his career, Dr. Nyakoe has served in various capacities across some of South Africa’s most respected academic hospitals. His roles have spanned from Medical Officer and Registrar at Chris Hani Baragwanath Academic Hospital, Rahima Moosa Mother and Child Hospital, and Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital between 1996 and 2003, to his current position as a leading Specialist Obstetrician and Gynaecologist at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital. Here, he heads the Fetal Medicine Unit and manages a unit dedicated to high-risk pregnancies complicated by medical conditions, showcasing his unparalleled expertise and leadership. Between 2004 and 2006, Dr. Nyakoe also enriched his practice with experience in the private sector at Muelmed Mediclinic in Pretoria, and since 2008, he has maintained a part-time private practice at Netcare Parklane Hospital and Netcare Linksfield/Linkwood Hospitals.

Dr. Nyakoe’s clinical interests are broad yet focused, encompassing ultrasound in obstetrics and gynaecology, fetal anomaly scans, fetal therapy, screening for genetic abnormalities, and managing maternal diseases, preterm births, and complications arising from multiple pregnancies. His work is especially critical in managing high-risk pregnancies, where his expertise can mean the difference between life and death for both mothers and their unborn children.

A fervent believer in continuous professional development and collaboration, Dr. Nyakoe holds memberships in several prestigious medical societies, including the South African Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (SASOG), the South African Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (SASUOG), the International Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ISUOG), the South African Medical Association (SAMA), and the Colleges of Medicine of South Africa (CMSA). He is also registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), ensuring his practices meet and exceed the highest standards of medical care.
